Do I Need a Training Bra?

By: Lindsay Lam

Hey girlies, let’s talk about training bras! Are you thinking about buying your first bra, and wondering if it’s the right time to start wearing one? Puberty can be a stressful time as your body is constantly changing, but we’re always here to help you. And if you’re thinking of asking your mom or family member to take you bra shopping for the first time, we’ve got you covered on how to talk to your parent about needing your first bra.

why do girls wear training bras?

First things first, what exactly is a training bra for? Unlike regular bras, training bras are designed for girls like you who are in the early stages of breast development. And while they might be a good starting point, many training bras are flimsy and thin! However, Apricotton bras are comfortable and support you as you go through these changes!

signs you might need a bra

  • Breast Development: One of the most obvious signs that it might be time for a training bra is breast development. If you notice changes in your chest area, such as budding breasts or nipple sensitivity, it's a good indication that your body is beginning to develop.
  • Discomfort: As your breasts grow, you might experience discomfort or tenderness, especially during physical activities or when wearing tight-fitting clothing. A training bra can help provide a bit of support and protection.
  • Body Confidence: Feeling self-conscious or unsure about your changing body is completely normal. Wearing a bra can offer a sense of security and confidence, allowing you to focus on other aspects of your life without worrying about your appearance.

tips for choosing and wearing a bra

  • Get Proper Measurements: Just like with regular bras, it's essential to get properly measured to ensure a comfortable fit. Many department stores offer free bra fitting services, or you can measure yourself at home using tools like our super easy size guide we designed.
  • Comfort is Key: When choosing a bra, prioritize comfort above all else. Look for soft, breathable fabrics and avoid anything with underwire or excessive padding, as these can be uncomfortable for developing breasts.
  • Start Small: Don't feel pressured to jump straight into wearing a full-fledged bra. Start with a simple, lightweight bra and gradually transition to more structured styles as your body continues to develop. We suggest starting out with the basics, like our Perfect Sports Bra or Cloud Bra!
  • Embrace Your Body: Remember that every girl develops at her own pace, and there's no right or wrong time to start wearing a training bra. Embrace your body and the changes it's going through, and know that you're not alone in this journey. We’re always here to answer your questions! 🙂

Most importantly, the decision to wear a training bra ultimately comes down to you, and whatever you’re comfortable with! If you're experiencing breast development and feel like a training bra would help with any discomfort or insecurity, then it's worth considering. Growing up, I never even knew training bras existed, and had so much trouble with finding a regular bra that fit. Going from no bra to a regular bra seemed like a huge step, and it was hard to feel comfortable in my own body. That’s why we’ve designed bras that grow with you, so you won’t have to worry about finding one that fits. Just remember to choose comfort, embrace your body, and know that you're beautiful just the way you are! You got this girl.

Apricotton bras are designed to be your perfect first bra because they’re super comfy and grow with you as you develop. You can shop our bestsellers here or send us a message if you have any questions!
