Tampons vs. Pads: Which One Should You Use?

Tampons vs. Pads: Which One Should You Use?

By: Lindsay Lam

So you got your period for the first time! Or maybe you’re still new to it and figuring out whether tampons or pads are the way to go. Trust me, you’re not alone. It’s a common question, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer—it’s all about what works best for your body, lifestyle, and comfort. Let’s break down the pros and cons of each to help you make the best choice for you.

pads: the basics

Pads stick to the inside of your underwear and are super absorbent. They come in various sizes, lengths, and absorbencies, so you can pick one based on your flow and personal preference. Don’t get them confused with liners though! Liners are super helpful for lighter days near the end of your period but might not be thick enough for heavy days. Many girls choose to use liners outside of their period too, to help absorb any discharge.

Pros

  • Easy to Use: Pads are super easy to use. Just peel off the backing, stick it to your underwear, and you’re good to go. Some also come with wings that you can peel and wrap around the bottom of your underwear for extra security.
  • No Insertion Required: If you’re hesitant to insert menstrual products into your body, pads are a great option for beginners!
  • Variety: They come in different sizes, from super thin to extra absorbent, and in many shapes and lengths to fit your needs. If you usually have a heavy flow, overnight pads are totally helpful from preventing leaks throughout the night.

Cons:

  • Visibility: Depending on the design of your underwear and clothing, pads might have a noticeable outline. Although this is normal and you shouldn’t feel embarrassed, you may prefer other options for a cleaner look.
  • Discomfort: Some girls find that pads can feel bulky or shift around, especially if you’re very active. If you’re planning on swimming, pads are not a great option since they soak up water and become really heavy.
  • Odor: Pads can sometimes trap odors, although some brands have been working on odor-fighting technology.

now for tampons: the basics

What are they? Tampons are small, absorbent cylinders that you insert into your vagina. They’re designed to absorb menstrual fluid internally, so you don’t have to worry about external leakage.

Pros:

  • Discreet: Because tampons are worn internally, they’re less visible and generally don’t show through your clothes.
  • Active Lifestyle: They’re a great choice if you’re into sports or activities because they don’t move around or shift like pads can.
  • Comfort: Many people find tampons more comfortable once they get used to inserting them correctly.

Cons:

  • Insertion: Inserting tampons can be tricky at first, and you might need some practice to get it right.
  • Removal: You’ll need to remove and replace them every few hours, which can be inconvenient.
  • Risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS): Though rare, TSS is a serious condition associated with tampon use. To minimize risk, change your tampon every 4-8 hours and use the lowest absorbency needed.

 other options

While tampons and pads are the most common choices, there are a few other options you might hear about. These are great to explore once you’re more comfortable with menstrual products, but let’s keep it simple for now.

  • Menstrual Cups: These are flexible cups made of silicone or rubber that you insert into your vagina. They collect menstrual fluid rather than absorbing it. They’re reusable and can hold more fluid than tampons or pads, but they do require practice to insert, remove, and wash in between use.
  • Period Underwear: These are specially designed underwear that absorbs menstrual fluid. They can be a great option for light days or as a backup for other products.

making your choice: what to consider

  1. Comfort: How does each product feel to you? Experiment to see what you find more comfortable, and everyone has a different preference!
  2. Lifestyle: Consider your daily activities. If you’re swimming, playing sports, or on the go a lot, tampons might be more convenient. If you prefer something low-maintenance or have a heavy flow, pads could be the way to go.
  3. Flow: If you have a heavy flow, you might want to try a combination of products or opt for high-absorbency options in both categories.
  4. Environment: Think about the environmental impact. There are eco-friendly options for both tampons and pads, such as organic cotton products and menstrual cups.

Ultimately, there’s no right or wrong choice—just what works best for you. Listen to your body, and don’t hesitate to make adjustments as needed. Whether you go with tampons, pads, or other options, finding the right menstrual product can help you feel more comfortable and confident during your period.
