Will Bras Affect Breast Growth?

Will Bras Affect Breast Growth?

By: Rachel Peng

Ah, the age-old question full of speculation. Many girls grow up with somebody telling you that if you wear bras during puberty, it will prevent them from growing. Is it true? Do bras affect your breast growth?

The simple answer is no. Wearing bras does not affect your breast growth.

During puberty and near your period, your breasts may feel more tender and sensitive. When you wear bras that are too tight, you’ll feel super uncomfortable (that’s probably also why people think bras inhibit breast growth!). The truth is, it’s genes and hormones that control breast growth—not what you wear (Kids Health Organization).

That being said, finding a bra that fits well is still really important. An ill-fitting bra can cause discomfort, digging into your skin or making you feel restricted, especially when your body is already changing. On the flip side, the right bra can offer support and make you feel more comfortable as you go about your day—whether you’re at school, hanging out with friends, or dancing your heart out in the studio.

Remember, everyone grows at their own pace, and breast development can look different for each person. Some girls may develop earlier, while others might take more time. Both are completely normal. What matters most is feeling confident in your body and giving it the care it deserves.

So, if you’ve ever worried about a bra stunting your growth, remind yourself that your body knows what it’s doing. Your job? Find what makes you feel comfortable and supported along the way.
