The Easiest Way to Make Friends at a New School (Even If You’re Shy)

If the idea of walking up to a total stranger and starting a conversation makes your stomach turn, you're not alone and the good news is, you don't actually have to do that. The easiest friendships aren't built on small talk, they're built on shared activities. Here's how to let clubs and sports do the hard work for you.

Why Clubs and Sports Are the Ultimate Friendship Hack

When you join a school club or a sports team, the shared activity completely removes the pressure of figuring out what to say. You don't have to force a conversation because the activity gives you an automatic, natural reason to interact.Instead of grasping for random topics, you just talk about whatever you're working on in that moment.

Take it from me! In high school, I was on the yearbook council and did karate. Having a literal task to focus on like editing a page layout together or running through a martial arts drill, gave me an immediate reason to laugh and connect with the people around me. Before I knew it, my club members had become my closest friends.

What If Your School Doesn't Have the Group You Want?

If you check the sign-up sheets during the first week and nothing grabs your attention, don't sweat it. Another great thing about high school is that you're not limited to what already exists on campus.

A bunch of my own friends realized their school was missing groups for their exact niche interests, so they just started their own clubs from scratch. Whether it's a specific hobby, a gaming group, or a passion project, all it really takes is finding a supportive teacher to sponsor it.

Starting your own club is basically a magnet for finding great friends. Instead of hunting through the hallways trying to figure out who matches your vibe, putting your own project out there makes the right people come find you.

Bottom line: Don't let being shy stop you from making the first move. If you use the transition tips from our previous high school guide and combine them with the power of clubs and sports, building your dream friend group will happen completely naturally.
