Puberty is a time of big changes for your body. You grow taller, you might get acne, you’ll get your first period and of course, your chest will get bigger. Getting your first bra is a big step on your way to growing up. But how do you know if you’re ready for your first bra?
While the average age for girls to get their first bra is eleven, you might need a bra a little bit before or even after your eleventh birthday. There is no exact age or time to get your first bra as every girl’s body is different. So how do you know when it’s time to get your first bra then? Here are four signs that it may be time to ask your family to take you bra shopping.
1. when your breasts start to develop
If you can see your chest starting to look bigger and different, it’s probably time to get your first bra. When you go through puberty, your body creates something called estrogen which causes your breasts to start getting bigger. So if you check yourself out in the mirror and notice that your boobs are slowly starting to grow, there’s a good chance that it’s time to get a bra.
2. when you see your friends wearing bras
Have you noticed your friends or classmates talking about their first bras? Then it may be time to join the club and get your first bra too. While peer pressure isn’t always a good thing, if you feel uncomfortable or left out by not having a bra, maybe it’s time to get one.
3. when your boobs start to feel painful or uncomfortable
During puberty, there are things called hormones that are released in your body that make your boobs grow. Hormones can make the skin around your boobs stretch and change the levels of fluid in your boobs, all things that can make your boobs hurt a lot as you go through puberty. So if you’re feeling aches and pains in your chest, it’s totally normal but shows that it’s probably time to start looking at bras.
4. when you start feeling like you need more support for sports
Are you feeling uncomfortable in gym class or at practice with your developing chest? If you’re finding it hard to run or play sports with your boobs bouncing around, then it is probably time to get a bra with support to help you when you exercise.
