Navigating Body Image in High School
By: Lindsay Lam
High school can be a challenging time when it comes to body image. From comparing yourself to others on social media to navigating the pressure of fitting in, the struggle to feel confident in your own skin is real. It's easy to feel like you don't measure up to the idealized images you see online or the expectations set by peers. However, embracing your unique qualities, learning to use social media mindfully, building supportive relationships, and finding clothes that reflect your personal style can all contribute to a healthier sense of self-esteem. Here are essential tips to help you feel confident and comfortable in your own skin:
1. embrace your individuality
Instead of comparing yourself to others, celebrate what makes you special—your talents, personality, and passions. Embracing your individuality allows you to develop a positive self-image based on strengths rather than external appearances. Now is the best time to develop hobbies, pick up a new job, and learn about your likes/dislikes!
2. navigate social media wisely
Social media often presents edited and filtered versions of reality, creating unrealistic standards of beauty. Remember, what you see online isn't always reflective of real life. It's okay to take breaks from social media to focus on activities that make you feel genuinely happy and fulfilled. We understand that it’s hard when you only see flawless skin and seemingly perfect lifestyles online, but things like acne and insecurity are SO much more common than you realize.
3. positive relationships and a support system
Surround yourself with friends who appreciate and support you for who you are. Positive relationships can significantly impact your self-esteem and help you see yourself in a positive light. If you’re surrounded by friends who put others down or constantly fixate on their insecurities, it can definitely affect the way you think about yourself. While it may be difficult, knowing when to take a step back and prioritize your wellbeing is crucial.
4. finding clothes that fit you
Wearing clothes that fit well and express your personal style can totally boost your confidence! So many girls fall into the mindset that they need to fit into the same size for years, when puberty and high school is the time for your body to grow and change! Choose outfits that make you feel comfortable - you don’t need the trendiest clothes to feel confident. We designed bras that last and grow with you because we understand how your body changes! From sports bras to everyday bras, we have something for everyone <3
