How Do I Get Rid of Discharge?

How Do I Get Rid of Discharge?

By: Rachel Peng

Okay, let’s talk about something that all girls deal with but hardly talk about—discharge. No, it’s not gross, and yes, it is totally normal. While it can be annoying, you can’t actually "get rid" of discharge—in fact, you need it for your body to function the way it needs to! Let’s break it down on why it happens, what’s normal, and how to keep things fresh:

First of all, what is discharge?

Your body produces vaginal discharge to keep things clean and balanced down there! This discharge plays a crucial role in keeping the vagina clean, lubricated, and protected against harmful bacteria and infections. It is produced by the uterus, cervix, and vagina and consists mainly of cells and bacteria. It is typically clear, white, or off-white in colour. While it is a normal bodily function, any noticeable changes in discharge could indicate an infection or health issue.

The amount of vaginal discharge varies from person to person—some experience more, while others produce very little. However, shifts in its color, consistency, smell, or quantity might signal a problem.

How to Keep Things in Check

  1. Wear Breathable Cotton Underwear Your girl down there likes to breathe. Synthetic fabrics trap moisture, making things worse. Stick to cotton and change your underwear daily (obviously)!

  2. Skip the Scented Soaps & Wipes Your vagina is self-cleaning; it doesn’t need perfumes or special washes. Just use warm water and mild, fragrance-free soap on the outside—never inside (it messes with your pH)!

  3. Stay Hydrated & Eat Well What you put in your body affects everything, including discharge. Eating lots of sugar and processed foods can throw off your pH, so balance it out with water, probiotics (like yogurt or kimchi), and leafy greens.

  4. Practice Good Hygiene Always wipe front to back, change out of sweaty clothes quickly, and don’t sit around in wet swimsuits. Bacteria love moisture, and we’re not about to let them win.

  5. Consider Using Liners If discharge is making you feel uncomfortable throughout the day, panty liners can help keep you feeling fresh and dry. Opt for unscented, breathable liners to avoid irritation, and change them regularly to maintain good hygiene. However, don’t rely on them 24/7—your skin needs to breathe, so give yourself some liner-free time when you can!

  6. Know When to See a Doctor If the discharge is suddenly yellow or green, smells really strong, or comes with itching and irritation, don’t try to Google-diagnose yourself—just go to a doctor. No shame in taking care of yourself!

Don’t forget, discharge is super normal. If something feels off, though, always listen to your body. Treat her well, and she’ll take care of you.
