A tampon is a small, absorbent tube that you insert into your vagina to absorb period blood! It can be extra helpful for girls who are more active, go swimming or prefer to avoid any mess from pads. Tampons come in different sizes and absorbencies, so you can choose one that works best for the heaviness of your flow.

how do i start?

  1. Relax! Being nervous makes your muscles tense up, which can make insertion harder. Take a deep breath and know that it might take a couple of tries to get comfortable.

  2. Wash Your Hands to keep bacteria away from your vagina, staying clean and hygienic.

  3. Choose the Right Tampon – If it’s your first time, test it out with a smaller, tampon for light flows that has a plastic applicator. The size and material of the applicator makes it easier to insert.

  4. Find a Comfortable Position – Your legs need to be apart, so you can sit on the toilet, squat or even place a foot on the bathtub edge to insert.

step-by-step guide to inserting a tampon

  1. Open the Wrapper – Take out the tampon and hold by the applicator (outer tube that can be cardboard or plastic).

  2. Locate the Vaginal Opening – Using your other hand, gently look for where to insert the tampon. (Below your urethra, where you pee out of)

  3. Insert the Tampon – Hold the spot where the applicator meets the tampon. Gently push the rounded tip into your vagina at an angle, aiming back.

  4. Push the Applicator – Use your finger to push the smaller tube inside the larger tube, which will insert the tampon.

  5. Remove the Applicator – Once the tampon is in, pull out the applicator, leaving the string hanging outside your body.

  6. Check for Comfort – If it feels uncomfortable, it might not be in far enough! You can adjust with your finger if needed.

  7. Remove (After 4-6 Hours) -  Pull gently on the string to take out the used tampon. Wrap it in some toilet paper and throw it into the trash, never flush!

tips for beginners

  • Try when you’re on your period – Inserting a tampon is easier when your flow is heavier because the blood helps it slide in smoothly.

  • Don’t rush – It’s okay of it takes a couple of tries! If it doesn’t work the first time, take a break and try again later.

  • Tampons shouldn’t hurt after insertion – If a tampon feels painful, it might not be inserted deeply enough or you might be using too big of a size for your flow.

  • Change it regularly – Never leave a tampon in for more than 8 hours to avoid health risks.

Trying a tampon for the first time can feel a little weird, but soon it’ll become just another part of your period routine. If you have any concerns or need help, don’t be afraid to ask a trusted adult. With a little practice, it’ll be second nature in no time!
